Confronting 13 Years of Permanent War
by RON RIDENOUR

October 17, 2014 -This month of October presents us with 13 years of permanent war for profit or, as the warmongers call it, the "war against terror". This "operation" is killing and maiming millions of people especially in the oil rich Middle East. Simultaneously these Juggernaut nations "of the willing" are choking Mother Earth to death—polluting the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that spawns our food, and eradicating millions of species. Most people are clearly aware that the main cause of climate change, which is destroying the planet, is human motivated. And many are acting against this. But most environmental organizations and activists ignore the wars that kill people while they pollute the planet...

Welsh council embargoes Israel over Gaza “savageness”
Asa Winstanley

October 17, 2014 - A local council in north Wales last week voted to condemn Israel’s summer war on the Gaza Strip by blocking all trade relations with Israel, local press reported.News North Wales quotes councillor Owain Williams, who put forward the motion, as condemning the "over-reaction and savageness used" by Israel in Gaza.Councillors on 9 October voted 42-3 in favor of the motion, with six abstentions.According to another local press source, Gwynedd council does not do any trade with Israel so the vote is largely symbolic...

Can Palestinian-American Rasmea Odeh get a fair trial?
Victoria Brittain

October 17, 2014 - Rasmea Odeh, a long-standing Palestinian/American community organiser in Chicago, goes on trial in Detroit on 4 November in a case dating back to her naturalisation application in 2004. Odeh is charged with immigration fraud. She faces a 10 year prison sentence, a fine of $250,000, or deportation after 20 years living in the US. Rasmea’s case looks likely to become another notorious one in which Israeli intelligence cooperation with US authorities sees prominent Palestinian/Americans removed from public life by long prison sentences or deportation. Some of the US names involved in bringing those iconic cases of injustice – against the Holy Land Foundation and Professor Sami Al Arian - have already emerged in preliminary hearings on this one....

ISIS Cited as Michigan Village’s Police Push for Secrecy
Jason Ditz

October 17, 2014 - The tiny village of Oakley, Michigan looks fairly unremarkable as you drive through it. Located along the M-52 highway, it consists of little more than a single traffic light, with a bar on one side and a gas station on the other. It’s a village of secrets, however, or so it would seem. Oakley has 290 residents. They also have over 100 police, for some reason. Those police are also, more or less entirely anonymous. Who those police are or what they are doing is a mystery, even to the village trustees, who say they don’t even have a proper list of their own of who all these people are, though they have been assured by the police chief that many of them have never even been to Oakley, and likely never will...

Only 4% of drone victims in Pakistan named as al Qaeda members
Jack Serle

October 16, 2014 - As the number of US drone strikes in Pakistan hits 400, research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism finds that fewer than 4% of the people killed have been identified by available records as named members of al Qaeda. This calls in to question US Secretary of State John Kerry’s claim last year that only "confirmed terrorist targets at the highest level" were fired at.
The Bureau’s Naming the Dead project has gathered the names and, where possible, the details of people killed by CIA drones in Pakistan since June 2004. On October 11 an attack brought the total number of drone strikes in Pakistan up to 400....

In memory of Edward Said: the one-state solution
Ibrahim Halawi

October 16, 2014- With the symbolic recognition this week of the state of Palestine "alongside the state of Israel" in the UK, the decades-long debate was fuelled again. The advocates of a two-state solution in the international community and the stubborn backers of the Oslo Accords are shining their shoes and vesting their suits. In the meantime, a wise Palestinian-American theorist and intellectual is rolling in his grave. Edward Said said it long ago and it can’t be more accurate today: "The question, I believe, is not how to devise means for persisting in trying to separate them, but to see whether it is possible for them to live together as fairly and peacefully as possible."..

October 16, 2014 - Israeli forces raided the West Bank village of Beit Laqiya on Thursday night and shot Bahaa Samir Badir, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy, 3 times in the chest. Badir died 2 hours later at the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah. Ma’an reports the boy was shot at "close range" and suffered from "severe bleeding". Haaretz reported the unit’s commander "open fired" killing the boy.The Israeli military alleges one of their units entered Beit Laqiya "after stones were thrown in the area" according to Haaretz. Which begs the question, who were the targets of the stone throwing before the military unit raided the village? Who reported the alleged stone throwing?....

The drones will no doubt soon be undertaking airstrikes alongside RAF Tornados and US aircraft. It is expected that further RAF Reapers will join this initial deployment once UK forces withdraw from Afghanistan. Recognizing Palestine
by JOHN FEFFER

October 16, 2014 - In his recent meeting with President Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he was "committed to the vision of peace for two states for two peoples." That sounds nice. But if he’d been pressed, Netanyahu might have admitted that the two states he had in mind were Israel and the United States, not Israel and Palestine. After all, Netanyahu has done everything possible to demonstrate that he’s not interested in negotiating a two-state solution with Palestinian representatives. The most recent example is the go-ahead given to new construction in the Givat Hamatos neighborhood of Jerusalem, across the Green Line, which will make it more difficult to share the city with a Palestinian state. Over the summer, the Netanyahu government annexed nearly 1,000 acres of West Bank territory...

By Tamar Fleishman – Qalandiya

October 16, 2014 - The supervision over the people arriving at the checkpoint, over the thousands of families living in Qalandiya refugee camp and over the tens of businesses on the main road between Ramallah and East Jerusalem is tightening, and the asymmetry between the soldiers who are armed with rifles and grenades and the boys and teenagers who throw at them stones and Molotov Bottles or roll over burning tires, is growing. After the murder of the two teenagers in Beitunia by a bored soldier and the abduction of the Muhammad Abu-Khdeir, the boy who was burnt alive, the winds in Palestine and East Jerusalem began to stir and the youngsters began holding protests more often, additional surveillance cameras were installed on the top of the tower overlooking the refugee camp and next to them were placed projectors which during all hours of the day light both the public and the privet sphere with an intrusive bright green light...

Government Frustrates Court’s Plan for Release of Videos of Guantanamo Prisoner Being Force-Fed
By: Kevin Gosztola

October 16, 2014 - The United States government is planning to appeal a decision by a federal judge, who ordered the release of at least twenty-eight videos of a Guantanamo Bay prisoner being forcibly extracted from his cell in shackles and force-fed. Attorneys for the Justice Department have requested an administrative stay so videos are not made public before an appeal is filed. Abu Wa’el Dhiab, a Syrian who has been imprisoned at Guantanamo since 2002 and was cleared for release in 2009 by President Barack Obama’s own review task force, engaged in a hunger strike with other prisoners in April 2013. He was protesting his indefinite detention and confinement conditions. The government attempted to break his protest through forced-feeding and Dhiab sought a preliminary injunction to halt the forced-feeding and forcible cell extractions (FCEs), which he believes is cruel and inhuman treatment...

Iran’s aggressive information campaign
Tony Badran

October 16, 2014- ...With their information campaign, the Iranians are exposing publicly the extent to which the White House is pursuing them, even as they continue to talk trash to it. For the Iranians, this is designed to signal clearly to their regional rivals that they have the Americans in hand. Take for instance the ongoing series of photo shoots Qods Force commander Qassem Soleimani has been doing in Iraq. Soleimani models in different settings — under the cover of the US Air Force. There’s the jovial Hajj Qassem dancing, weapon in hand, with Iraqi forces. Then there’s Soleimani the General visiting his men on the front, shaking hands with Peshmerga from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan or with fighters from the Shiite militias he runs. Hajj Qassem also sports different styles from one photo shoot to the next — though his Palestinian-style black and white keffiyeh is always wrapped around his neck; after all, he is the commander of the force named for Jerusalem. The latest is the cool special ops look, in black fatigues complete with his cap turned backwards....

George W. Bush was still completely wrong about Iraq’s WMDs
Matt Purple

October 16, 2014 - Yesterday the New York Times published a major scoop: American troops had uncovered chemical weapons during the Iraq war, and on at least six occasions were injured by chemical agents. The government then frantically tried to conceal the WMDs, keeping the information classified and, in some cases, denying soldiers care for chemical-related injuries. There are plenty of conclusions to draw from the Times story. That the Bush administration’s decision to invade Iraq is vindicated is not one of them...

Israel’s High Court chooses occupation over international law
By Gerard Horton

October 16, 2014 - Sitting as the High Court of Justice, Israel’s Supreme Court has heard thousands of petitions submitted on behalf of Palestinians living under military occupation since 1967. This gives rise to an unusual situation whereby the highest civilian court in Israel permits individuals, who could be considered as enemy aliens, to submit petitions challenging the actions of Israel’s military in occupied territory. Some use this as evidence to argue that adequate domestic remedies are available to Palestinians, which in turn creates the impression that no international judicial scrutiny or intervention is warranted. The strength of this argument needs to be assessed with reference to a number of the Court’s decisions...

October 16, 2014 - News about developments of the Palestinian issue continue to pour in through all media outlets, and statements and political speeches do not stop, but we hardly hear about the core and essence of the Palestinian issue which is the problem of Palestinian refugees. Most of the actions related to finding a solution for the Palestinian case revolve around the establishment of a Palestinian state, or the so-called two-state solution. Meanwhile the issue of the refugees remains excluded, or marginalised, from these steps, in light of very weak hints by Palestinian politicians...

Archaeology as a tool of the occupation
Jessica Purkiss

October 16, 2014 - It costs four dollars to visit the archaeological site of Susiya in the southernmost part of the West Bank. For your four dollars you can view an ancient Jewish city, supposedly once home to 3,000 people which peaked in the years 400 to 800 CE, the late Talmudic, mid-Byzantine, and early Arab eras. The Jewish inhabitants are estimated to have disappeared some 1,200 years ago, according to the Center for Educational Tourism in Israel. Father and son, Muhammad and Nasser Nawaj'ah, paid their four dollars, not to marvel at the century's old synagogue or the ancient water system but to reminisce- Mohammed was born in one of the cave dwellings as was his son....

Revisionist History 101: Bush Was Right About Iraq WMD!
By Murtaza Hussain

October 15, 2014 - Perhaps the most movingly pitiful exercise in American politics is the periodic attempt by Iraq War advocates to grasp at new developments that might somehow vindicate their disastrous, criminal support of that endeavor. The latest attempt came yesterday, when The New York Times published an explosive new story on American soldiers who were wounded while handling corroded munitions extracted from Saddam Hussein’s inactive chemical weapons program. The Iraq Study Group has long documented the existence of these decrepit and corroded weapons stocks in Iraq, something which has precisely nothing to do with the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" claims purveyed by war supporters...

Drone victims sue German government for facilitating strikes in Yemen

These are some of their stories: Ali, 10-years-old: "The army keeps coming to our school and throws tear gas at us. One time a boy choked and was taken to hospital. Some children cry and scream." Abu Ali, 40 years old: "Settlers from the settlements around us (Arusat, Brahay and Itshar) attack us while we are picking olives. In Report to UN Committee Against Torture, US Government Touts Division That Doesn’t Really Prosecute Torturers
By: Kevin Gosztola

October 15, 2014 - The United States government submitted its "periodic report" to the United Nations Committee Against Torture. There are multiple glaring aspects of the government’s report on how it believes it is complying fully with the Convention Against Torture (CAT), however, one part of the report where the government claims to have done what it was supposed to do to investigate torture stands out. In particular, the government highlights a Justice Department division as a challenge to impunity for torture, which appears to have prosecuted zero public cases of torture against US officials. To those unfamiliar, countries which are signatories to the CAT are expected to submit reports every four years to the committee....

Iran's Special Forces Commander Qassam Suleimani Takes Center Stage In Fight Against ISIS

October 15, 2014 - The commander of Iran’s secretive special forces unit known as the Quds Force has appeared on Iranian television standing alongside Kurdish peshmerga fighters, in what analysts are calling a message to the West that Iran is the answer in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group. Major General Qassem Suleimani has stepped out of the shadows and appeared often in Iraq since the fall of the Iraqi town of Mosul to the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS, in June. How Israel relies on Islamophobia
Paul Racco

October 15, 2014 - In the latest edition of "Axis of Evil" politics Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued to the United Nations on September 29th that "Hamas is ISIS, ISIS is Hamas," and that they are following the path blazed by Iran 35 years ago. The Prime Minister in the process exposed the mutual relationship between Zionism and its crutch: Islamophobia. What could a national resistance party in Gaza, an international jihadist organization in the northern Levant, and the state of Iran have in common? The Prime Minister would have you believe they all adhere to the same doctrine of militant Islam that is forever at war with the rational, liberal, ever-philanthropic West. Yet, with an accusation as inaccurate as George W. arguing that Iran and Iraq had anything in common other than a border, Netanyahu could only hope that the West heard "Muslim, Muslim, Muslim," and jumped on its Crusading bandwagon...

The only force now capable of doing so is the growing global boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement.
