Day one of Iraq's civil war: Sunnis killed, "dozens" of Sunni mosques attacked

Truth about Iraqis

February 22, 2006

The US plan for the liberation of Iraq has finally entered its final stages.

As civil war looms almost inevitably, the US plan for Iraq is bearing fruit.

Reuters has reported that at least nine Sunnis were killed in Basra.

As of 5:30pm EST, BBC is reporting: 'Sunni militants' killed in Basra

Gunmen have killed at least 10 people after storming Mina prison in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, police have said.

They said all of the victims were believed to be Sunni militants, including at least two Egyptians. The bodies of 10 of the inmates were found later in the city, amid reports that they had been tortured before being killed.

Some 75 Sunni mosques As of 4pm EST, AP reported at least 90 mosques have been attacked throughout the country. At least one has been razed to the ground.

The BBC just reported that at least six Sunni Iraqis have been killed in revenge attacks for the explosions at the Askariya Mosque in Sammara earlier today.

The network also said "dozens" of Sunnis mosques have been attacked.

During its 4pm EST newscast, BBC said three Sunni clerics were executed. I read elsewhere, one Sunni cleric was kidnapped.

Sistani has called for street protests but restraint. That's got to be an oxymoron. Put men on the street and they will enrage one another. People should all be confined to their homes while calm prevails. I am suspicious of Sistani.

Sadr's spokesperson has called for revenge, saying it is the only way to deal with "strays from Islam" a veiled reference to the Sunni community.

A Sunni politician says "revenge will follow revenge".

Soon, no Iraqis will be left to even make speeches. Day one of America's civil war in Iraq continues.

More news in today's blogs.

And here from this morning.
