Defiant Iraqi President marks
69th birthday like his country: a prisoner of the US
occupation.
Saddam Husayn, still the legal
President of Iraq, on Friday marked his 69th birthday like the state of
Iraq itself, as a prisoner of the occupation.
In a statement on the occasion,
the Arab Socialist Baath Party noted that Iraq had become the most
difficult conundrum ever faced by America during its colonialist
history.
In many respects the role of
President Saddam Husayn mirrors the role of Iraq. Like the country he
is confined to a US prison, but he remains defiant and unbowed. In
session after session of the American-staged "trial" the Iraqi President
has stood firm against the illegal occupation and its mock "trial" as
well as against the charges trumped up by a "court" whose sole "legal"
authority is derived from the temporary presence of an alien army of
occupation.
Seven more bodies of torture
victims found in Baghdad Friday morning.
In a dispatch posted at 6:40pm

bodies on Ibrahim ibn 'Ali Street in the ash-Shu'lah district of

their heads set on fire. The victims were then shot to death.
The source at the Forensic
Medicine Department said that with the discovery of these latest seven
victims, a total of 66 bodies have been discovered since the beginning
of last week and until today, Friday. Fifty-one of the bodies were
those of Sunni citizens. The other bodies were those of Iraqi puppet
army men and puppet policemen killed by the Resistance.

when Resistance bomb explodes by Americans surrounding mosque in
Samarra’.

to a detailed search. The US troops were carrying pictures and were
comparing them with the worshippers headed to the mosques. Five
individuals who appeared to resemble the pictures were arrested by the
US forces. The four mosques that were singled out for the searches
were: ar-Ribat, Samarra’, al-Hayy al-Qayyum, and al-Kabir.
Diyala Province.
Ba'qubah.
US forces stage brutal mass
arrests in Diyala Province.
In a dispatch posted at 6:50pm
Makkah time Friday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US
occupation forces launched a massive campaign of raids and arrests in
various districts of the province of Diyala east and north of Baghdad at
dawn on Friday.
The correspondent for
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US troops and their Iraqi puppet
army allies carried out house-to-house raids in Ba'qubah, Buhriz,
al-Khalis, al-Miqdadiyah, Sharaban, and Khan Bani Sa'd. At the time of
reporting some 70 local citizens, ranging in age from 20 to 60, had been
arrested, but the raids were continuing.
The correspondent, who
personally witnessed one house raid by US forces in Ba'qubah, reported
that the Americans used a new method during Friday’s raids. They first
planted percussion grenades at the threshold of the home, blowing open
the door. But instead of charging in immediately as has previously been
their practice, they first waited a few minutes to assure themselves
that the house did not contain Resistance fighters and then stormed in.
Correspondent reported that the
American troops would very severely beat the man they wanted to arrest
in sensitive parts of his body to such an extent that the man would then
be incapable of standing. The Americans then put a bag over his head.
If the man’s wife, daughter or sister started to scream, they would be
kicked or punched by the various soldiers.

had then been shot in the head and chest. The correspondent reported

that they were Sunni Iraqis.

Al-Basrah.
US, Britain mass equipment,
boost air patrols along Iranian border east of al-Basrah.
In a dispatch posted at 12 noon
Makkah time Friday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US and
British forces have been heading towards the Iranian border east of the
city of al-Basrah in southern Iraq, according to eyewitnesses.
The correspondent for
Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents along the Shatt al-'Arab
waterway report that US and British heavy military equipment has been
moved up towards the border and that air patrols by American war planes
have been increased in order to intensify reconnaissance of the
frontier.
Residents of al-Basrah told
Mafkarat al-Islam that the offices of pro-Iranian Shi'i parties in
the city have been distributing arms to their members. The sources say
that most of the weapons being distributed come from Iran and were
smuggled over the border to the southern cities of al-Basrah and
al-'Amarah.
The moves come against a
backdrop of escalating US pressure on Iran over the issue of that
country’s right to develop peaceful nuclear energy, a right guaranteed
under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to which Iran is signatory.
Washington and its satellites in NATO are taking the position that Iran,
despite the wording of the treaty, should have no such right.
Local observers doubt that the
US is preparing a strike against Iran. It is thought, rather, that the
US and Britain on one side and Iran on the other are escalating
activities against each other on Iraqi soil as a form of applying
pressure to each other.
