Saddam's VP al-Douri in Damascus, Syria, Iran export death to Iraq - Iraqi official

Voices of Iraq

Baghdad, Apr 22,2008 (VOI)- Iraqi National Security Adviser Muwafaq al-Rubaei accused Syria and Iran of exporting death to Iraq, underlining that former vice president Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri exists in Damascus.

In an interview with London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper in its edition today, al-Rubaei said "death comes to us from Syria and Iran...Syrian system is an intelligent one and they could control the flow of suicide bombers who come from North Africa, Yemen and gulf."
"Around 110 suicide attackers used to enter Iraq every month. This number decreased and if the Syrian security authorities worked hard, they can stop this flow of attackers," he continued.
"The suicide attackers, who arrive in Iraq, come from Damascus and most of them are infiltrators," he added.
"Stability in Iraq considers as a victory of democracy and public freedoms and Syrians consider that as a victory of the U.S. and the American experience in the region," the Iraqi official explained.
Meanwhile, he said that Tehran supports al-Mahdi army fighters and al-Qaeda group and it aims that Iraq to be ruled by a pro-Iranian Shiite government, asserting that this would never happen because Iraqi Shiites are Arabs and proud of that.
"Iranians kept 100 al-Qaeda leaders who came from Afghanistan," al-Rubaei underlined.
"Weapons and armed militias used to come from Iran but this decreased recently and I say Iran is able to do more for maintaining Iraq's stability and security," he said.
He described cooperation with Saudi Arabia as "ideal".
He underlined that former vice president Izzat al-Douri is in Syria.
"We have an accurate intelligence reports which indicate that he is Syria and he finance several armed groups," the national security adviser said.
However, "Syrians deny these reports," he added.
Al-Douri was number five on the 55-wanted people list the U.S. military had announced after the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
On the number of armed militias in Iraq, Muwafaq al-Rubaei said "only al-Mahdi army exists in Iraq."
"Iraq could not stabilize with two armies in the country," he said, stressing that "we will not allow any armed militias in Iraq."
He spoke on the execution of former president Saddam Hussein.
"There are several unintended mistakes happened during the execution of Saddam Hussein," he pointed out.
