Pressure Cooker Scare: Saudi Held At Airport

Sky News

May 14, 2013

A man from Saudi Arabia has been arrested in the US after being found with a pressure cooker in his luggage at Detroit Airport.

Hussain al Khawahir is said to have lied to Customs and Border Protection officers about why he had the device, and is also alleged to have used a passport with a missing page.

The discovery on Saturday rang alarm bells, coming just weeks after two homemade pressure cooker bombs were used to attack people at the Boston Marathon.

The man's nephew, Nasser Almarzooq, said he asked his uncle to bring him the pressure cooker so he could make some lamb stew.

The Ohio student said two devices he bought for himself in the US were "not good at all", and said the ones available in Saudi Arabia were of a higher quality.

A brief court hearing on Monday heard that Mr al Khawahir originally told border agents he thought pressure cookers were not sold in America, then changed his story to say his nephew had bought one, but it "was cheap" and broke after one use.

Agents said they also noticed a page was missing from the Saudi national's passport.

He was then read his rights, and chose to remain silent, the criminal complaint said.

Federal prosecutors said brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev set off two shrapnel-packed pressure cooker bombs on April 15 near the race finish line in Boston. The attack killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Mr Almarzooq vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

"If I wanted to do something stupid like this, should I just take my uncle from Saudi Arabia to buy me a pressure cooker?" he said. "It's legal here."

Dawud Walid, from the Michigan branch of the Council of American-Islamic Relations, also urged caution.

"I hope that our government is not criminalising people if they travel and have cooking items just because they are Muslim or come from the Muslim world," he told the Detroit News.

Last Friday, Saudi newspaper Oukaz reported how student Talal al Rouki was questioned by FBI agents at his home in Michigan after neighbours reported seeing him carrying a pressure cooker.

One FBI agent reportedly told him: "You need to be more careful moving around with such things, Sir."
