The New York Times has sunk to an unprecedented level of stupidity

July 10, 2013 - New York Times has sunk to an unprecedented level of stupidity--I can't even call that biased reporting anymore. The only possible explanation for this is that Gehad El Haddad wrote this shit and then put a NYT byline to it. What sudden improvement in the quality of lives, are these people out of their fucking minds? To say that the quality of life in Egypt has improved is a fucking insult to our intelligence and our lives actually. And to say that the police has re-emerged and pretend that they were gone during Morsi's rule is an insult to the 42 people who were shot dead by the police in Port Said in January while Morsi encouraged the police in a public speech to "continue to be firm with thugs and criminals"... That is not to say that the military its regional supporters are not pumping in some cash that temporarily alleviates some of the problems to some degree, but no crisis is gone and wait a few more fucking days before you start celebrating the end of crisis, wait and see how state failure and protest will continue. To say that Egypt's structural problems and Morsi's failure to address these problems is a conspiracy is the worst form of elite-manipulation theorising I've seen in years and I thought that stuff was already dead...

The New York Times has sunk to an unprecedented level of stupidity

Karim Medhat Ennarah

July 10, 2013

New York Times has sunk to an unprecedented level of stupidity--I can't even call that biased reporting anymore ( http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/11/world/middleeast/improveme
nts-in-egypt-suggest-a-campaign-that-undermined-morsi.html ...

And to say that the police has re-emerged and pretend that they were gone during Morsi's rule is an insult to the 42 people who were shot dead by the police in Port Said in January while Morsi encouraged the police in a public speech to "continue to be firm with thugs and criminals".

The police never went any-fucking-where, from mid 2011 they were back on the streets in full force--yes in full force, and when the police are back in full force it does not mean that people's security improves, the police in Egypt oscillate between excessive brutality and dysfunctionality--the only difference is that this conundrum has become much more visible after the revolution because society has changed and they're challenged in ways they are not used to. And security has diminished because that's just what happens in times of social change and state breakdown. And what fucking gas lines are we talking about now? There were fuel shortages and power outages in Mubarak's last year, under SCAF and under Morsi's rule. We actually have started recently consuming more fuel than we are producing and we have a fiscal crisis and a shortage in foreign currency. That's a fact not a conspiracy. Morsi adopted an incredibly stupid policy of basically rotating the little cash available between gas stations and power stations, and that's why we experience long gas lines for a week and then they disappear and then power outages that come and go erratically. And while you're writing about how quality of life has improved in Egypt--some town in Upper Egypt is probably experiencing a return of 24 hour power outages now because of inconsistent rotation policy while David Kirkpatrick writes from his Zamalek house where he suddenly started enjoying consistent power supply and just assumed that the shortage is gone because it was artificial.

That is not to say that the military its regional supporters are not pumping in some cash that temporarily alleviates some of the problems to some degree, but no crisis is gone and wait a few more fucking days before you start celebrating the end of crisis, wait and see how state failure and protest will continue. To say that Egypt's structural problems and Morsi's failure to address these problems is a conspiracy is the worst form of elite-manipulation theorising I've seen in years and I thought that stuff was already dead.
